Courses

Our Master Signwriter and gilder Brian has produced some of the finest examples of handpainted signs and goldleaf gilding to be seen in the United Kingdom. He has an extraordinary amount of knowledge and experience in these very old and valued crafts. Having over forty years of experience in both areas he is recognised as one of the most accomplished and experienced signwriters and gilders in the country.

In response to the many requests we have received asking for tuition in signwriting and/or gilding, we are now pleased to offer a range of courses for individuals and groups wishing to explore these skills at a beginner’s level. The courses, which are held in the beautiful county of Yorkshire, run periodically throughout the year and include the following opportunities:-

Introduction to signwriting – this offers a beginners guide to the art of signwriting starting with the care of brushes, use of the mahl stick, paint choices, brush skills and control, how to choose appropriate designs and lettering styles, setting out of lettering and the skillful application of paints. We will provide sufficient instruction to enable the attendee to create a sample panel which they will retain at the end of the course. This is a one day course including lunch, tea and coffee as required. Price on enquiry. Overnight accommodation can be arranged

Create your own handpainted sign – this course offers all that is provided on the beginners course but also includes a look at a wider range of styles and artwork in the field of signwriting including the application of drop shades and other techniques, provides additional time to practice the skills and the opportunity for you to produce a hand painted sign (to a style and standard of each student’s own capabilities) for you to take away at the end. This is a two day course including lunch on both days and tea and coffee as required throughout the course. Price on enquiry. Overnight accommodation can be arranged.

Goldleaf gilding course – this course can be taken in isolation or as an ‘add on’ to either of the signwriting courses. The one and a half day course offers attendees a valuable opportunity to gain insight into the world of goldleaf gilding and teaches attendees the skill with which to gild a keepsake of their own choice (from a selection provided on the day by Brian the Brush Ltd). All gilding will be in 23.25ct goldleaf. Once gilded, the keepsake will be yours to take away at the end of the course. The course includes lunch on day one and tea and coffee as required throughout the duration of the course. The course finishes just before lunchtime on day two. Price on enquiry. Overnight accommodation can be arranged.

All of our courses are suitable for anyone who wishes to gain a little insight into these traditional crafts and have the ability to practice what they have learned under the instruction of a Master Craftsman.

We are also happy to offer training to apprentices and sign makers who wish to gain greater competence in either traditional handpainted signwriting or the application of goldleaf. Please enquire about our trades courses and longer learning opportunities.
